I love America. But it drives me crazy that you can’t get anywhere interesting at any degree of speed without a car. Right now, I take public transportation to the university from the suburbs of my city and a 20 minute drive usually takes an hour and a half. I don’t want to be in charge of a multi-ton death trap in the middle of a metropolis-much less have to park it. Aside from the environmental impact, that just seems like a seriously unsustainable way to live. Drive-throughs. Interstates bulldozing private property. Lack of geographical community. If gas prices suddenly spiked and we all quit using cars, I’d never be able to see my best friend again.
Maybe I’ll change my mind when I get an apartment right next to my job and find that the neighbour’s kids never stop watching My Little Pony with the volume at max or something. But I hope my response would be to invest in soundproof walls and extra coffeeshop trips, not to move to the suburbs.
Progress: done for my current city
